Vitreous Enameling Steel Grades (ASTM A424)

SRJ Steel is experienced with and supplies all enameling steel types and appropriate end uses.

Type 1 – Carbon content reduced to a very low level through process called “Open Coil Annealing” during manufacture in the steel mill.

  • AKA “Vit 1”, “Decarb”, “Vitrenamel” 1 (USS), “Univit” (Cliffs)
  • Suited for both one side and two side enameling applications
  • Particularly good formability
  • Appropriate for decorative, appearance end uses such as cooktops
  • Steel may exhibit some strength loss after firing

Type 2 – Low carbon content & addition of important alloying elements are achieved during steelmaking

  • AKA “Vit 2”, “Vitrenamel” 2 (USS), “Vit-Plus DS (Cliffs)
  • Suited for single ground coat or multiple coats. Not recommended for two side enameling
  • Moderate formability
  • Appropriate for non-appearance end-uses such as oven liners

Type 3 – Extra deep-drawing, titanium stabilized steel made by utilizing vacuum degassing to reduce the carbon level to an exceptionally low amount to create stable carbides

  • AKA “Vit 3”, “Vitrenamel” 3 (USS), “Ultravit” (AM Dofasco), “I-F Enamel” (Cliffs)
  • Suited for both one side and two side enameling applications
  • Outstanding formability and warpage resistance due to stable microstructure
  • Appropriate for deep drawing parts such as bathtubs, as well as large architectural panels prone to sag during the enameling process

All Vit steel types from SRJ Steel have excellent and verifiable glass bonding character including fishscale resistance. This guarantee is accomplished via proprietary testing and/or analysis of Titanium Precipitate Equivalence (TPE).
